Frequently Asked Questions

Is Innovative Surfaces made from regular concrete?

Yes, Innovative Surfaces is made from the same elements, but in a way that enables Innovative Surfaces products to be much thinner.

Do Innovative Surfaces tops crack or chip?

Innovative Surfaces countertops do not crack or chip like other concrete countertops are prone to do, and they are no more likely to crack and chip than other solid surface countertops.

Do they stain?

Innovative Surfaces countertops are honed and sealed, and are more resistant to staining from household products than even granite tops.

Do Innovative Surfaces tops scratch?  Can I cut on them?

They do develop a rich patina from wear or everyday use, but after years of use, if this patina does not appeal to you, they can be refinished in place to a “like new” appearance.  We recommend using a cutting board instead of cutting directly on Innovative Surfaces countertops.  The use of a cutting board is best for any type of countertop.  Why risk damage to your countertops or your knives?

Can I set a hot pan or skillet on Innovative Surfaces?

Setting a very hot pan or skillet on Innovative Surfaces countertops could cause some damage to the sealer, which would have to be repaired.  The concrete itself is not likely to be damaged.  We recommend the use of a pad or trivet.

How do Innovative Surfaces countertops compare to granite or Corian?

Our concrete countertops are less expensive than granite or Corian, and have unlimited design, color, shape and inlay possibilities.

Do I need to reinforce or build up my cabinets for Innovative Surfaces countertops?

No, Our Innovative Surfaces countertops, weighing only 8 to 10 pounds per square foot, are lighter than granite, and do not require a substrate for support.  They also have the capacity to flex some, which simplifies the installment process.

Do you pour your concrete countertops in place, or can I order my countertops and have them sent to me?

No, we do not pour in place.  We build them at our facility, and ship them to you, or to a nearby distributor/installer.

How are Innovative Surfaces concrete sinks and countertops cleaned?

Wiping clean with a dishcloth or sponge using dish soap is usually sufficient.  For dried stains, simply soak with a warm, wet cloth to re-hydrate and remove.  Do not use an abrasive type cleanser.

Can I get any color I want for my countertops?

Yes, we have 14 colors on our color chart.  We also can do custom colors for an additional charge.  We would need a color chip or sample of the color you want to match.
